More than 100 devotees have died in a stampede during a satsang in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras. This has been confirmed by the office of the ADG of Uttar Pradesh's Agra zone.
According to the information provided by the ADG office, the dead bodies have been taken to different places due to which the number of dead will be known later.
Earlier, Hathras Superintendent of Police Nipun Aggarwal confirmed it and told BBC Correspondent Dilnwaz Pasha that more than 60 people have been killed and many injured in this accident.
Eyewitnesses to the incident say that the death toll may increase in this accident. Hathras Tantra has also issued two helplines for public assistance- 9259189726 and 9084382490.
Earlier, Eta SSP Rajesh Kumar Singh said, "A tragic incident has taken place. Bhole Baba program was going on in Mugalgarhi village near Sikandarrau in Hathras district. Due to the stampede there, people have died. 27 dead bodies have arrived at Eta hospital. The bodies include 23 women, three children and one man. The injured are yet to come to the hospital here."
The injured are being shifted to Sikanderarau Trauma Center.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief over the Hathras tragedy during the debate on the motion of thanks on the President's address in the Lok Sabha.
He said, "There is serious news in the middle of the debate. Many people have died in the stampede in UP's Hathras. My condolences to the families of those who died. I wish the injured a speedy recovery." The system is under the supervision of the state government. I want to assure the House that all possible help will be given to the victims."
The government has announced an aid of two lakh rupees each to the families of the deceased and 50 thousand rupees to the injured.
BBC contributor Dharmendra Chowdhury has sent some videos from the trauma center in which the family members can clearly be seen in agony.
Relatives of the victims present at the trauma center said, “Such a big tragedy has happened but no senior officer is present here. Who gave permission to Bhole Baba to hold such a big program here? Where is the system?”
The injured and the dead were taken to the trauma center in trucks and vans.
In the video, the bodies of several women can be seen lying on the ground outside the trauma center.
A statement was issued by UP CMO on social media platform X. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has expressed his condolences to the bereaved families of the deceased.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has said that state government ministers Lakshminarayan Chaudhary and Sandip Singh have left for the spot. The chief secretary of the region and the director general of police are also reaching the spot.
The UP government has issued directives to take the injured to hospital immediately and provide appropriate treatment. Apart from this, orders have also been given to investigate the mishap under the leadership of ADG Agra and Commissioner Aligarh.
Opposition leader Rahul Gandhi has also expressed his condolences to the deceased.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is reaching Hathras on Wednesday.
What did the initial investigation reveal?
CMO Eta Umesh Kumar Tripathi also said, "The bodies have reached the postmortem house, including women and men. Many injured have also been admitted. More details of the incident will be given after investigation."
He said that the initial investigation revealed that the incident took place due to a stampede during a religious event.
A victim's family who reached the trauma center said, "Such a big tragedy happened but not a single senior official was seen. Who gave permission to Bhole Baba, where is the mechanism?"
The trauma center is in chaos and people have reached there in search of their loved ones.
Hathras DM Ashishkumar said, "During the religious satsang when the logos got hot, they started coming out. That's when the mishap took place. An inquiry committee has been formed to look into the incident. The permission to organize this was given by the SDM. It was a private event. The police force was deployed to maintain law and order. It was the work of the organizers. Now the fact of the matter will be known after the investigation, but our focus is on providing treatment to the injured."
